Gardner Francis Cooper Fox was born on May 20, 1911, in Brooklyn, New York. He is an American writer best known for creating many comic book characters for Comics in the Golden and Silver Age. He is believed to have written one more than 4,000 comics stories.

On his eleventh birthday, Fox received The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. These books sparked a lifelong love with fantasy fiction.

Mr. Fox is probably best known for writing comic books, but he also wrote over 150 paperback books.

Kurt Brugel is the Custodian and Illustrator for The Gardner Francis Fox Library. He started The Library after coming across the many paperback novels Mr. Fox wrote outside of his comic book stories. His initial intention was to find a Sword and Sorcery character in the public domain. He found Crom the Barbarian in 2014. Wanting to keep Mr. Fox’s voice for the character, Kurt looked for other writings Mr. Fox had done. He found The Warlock of Sharrador, originally published in Planet Stories in 1952. In 2015 Kurt adapted The Warlock of Sharrador into a new Crom the Barbarian story called: Crom and the Warlock of Sharrador. He also created 15 black and white illustrations to accompany the story.

While doing further research on Mr. Fox’s writing outside of the comic book industry, Kurt found that he wrote over 150+ paperback novels from the 1950’s to the early 1980’s. With acknowledgements from the Oregon Archives and the surviving Fox family members, Kurt started to acquire the old paperbacks, digitally transcribed them and published them to Amazon.

In august of 2018, Kurt built and launched The Official Gardner Francis Fox Library website. The Library’s mission is to digitally transcribe the 150+ paperbacks for others to find and fall in love.
